Rheem Unveils Space-Saving, 8.4 GPM Tankless Water Heater, Capable Of Handling 3-Bath Homes.
May 15, 2008
Measuring a modest 25-1/2 inches high, 13-1/2 inches wide and 10 inches deep, the new unit saves even more space and reduces installation time and expense through its use of concentric venting. Instead of separate Category III stainless steel vent runs for the fresh-air intake and exhaust lines, the RTG-66DV expels the by-products of its combustion process through a 3-inch exhaust pipe that sits inside the 5-inch intake run, thus eliminating the second line. The maximum vent length extends up to 23 feet, with three 90° elbows.
With inputs ranging from 11,000 BTU/hour to 180,000 BTU/hour, the unit delivers 120°F water at a rate of 6.6 gallons per minute (GPM) at a 45°F rise in temperature from input to output. At a 35°F rise, the flow rate increases to 8.4 GPM.
Part of Rheem’s new Third Generation of tankless water heaters, the RTG-66DV carries a longer warranty than previous models: 12 years on the heat exchanger and 5 years on parts – up from 10 and 3, respectively. In addition, the RTG-66DV also offers a one-year protection on all warranty service.
“This new, mid-range tankless water heater will provide an excellent hot-water solution for a large number of American homes with more than one bathroom,” comments Tim Shellenberger, vice president, general manager, for Rheem’s Tankless Water Heating business unit. “Because it features a smaller cabinet than our largest residential model and uses concentric venting, it will fit comfortably into a small space. Contractors will like the 3-inch/5-inch concentric venting system as well, because it simplifies the installation and cuts their time on the job.”
The new RTG-66DV unit also incorporates these important features:
High-altitude models: Unless optimized for high-altitude use, gas appliances cannot achieve their maximum BTU punch at mountain altitudes. Rheem has historically offered two high-altitude options: up to 6,560-foot or 9,840-foot elevations. But with the introduction of the RTG-66DV, an installer no longer must purchase a special altitude chip to program the unit to operate at maximum efficiency. Today, simply adjusting a built-in DIP switch will make a unit mountain-ready.
Remote control operation: The UMC-117 remote control can be set from 85°F to a maximum of 140°F. Additional remote control thermostats are also available and sold separately.
Connect two or more units for high-demand applications: The EZ-Link™ cable can connect two RTG-66DV units to operate as one. In addition, like all other Rheem tankless models, up to twenty (20) RTG-66DV units can be linked manifold-style to handle high-volume hot-water applications.
Film wrap overheat limiter: A Rheem exclusive, this device instantly detects an unsafe temperature in the heat exchanger of a tankless water heater and immediately shuts down the unit.
High performance: Intelligent electronic controls are designed to increase both energy efficiency and safety, while facilitating maintenance routines.
Green burner: Capable of using either natural gas or liquid propane, an environmentally friendly Low NOx burner fully complies with Southern California’s SCAQMD (South Coast Air Quality Management District) Rule 1121, which limits the level of nitrogen-oxide (NOx) emissions by residential gas-fired water heaters.
Freeze protection: If the RTG-66DV is exposed to excessively cold temperatures –down to -30°F – it will automatically provide low-level electric heat to prevent freezing.
Like the rest of the Rheem Tankless line, these units are third-party-certified by the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (GAMA) to have a minimum Energy Factor of .84.
