When to Install a Ductless Mini-Split System in Your Home

June 16, 2026

A ductless mini-split, sometimes referred to as a ductless HVAC system, is a flexible heating and cooling solution that provides precise heating and cooling temperature control—be it in one room or around the house.

Here is what you need to know about ductless mini-splits and the best times to install one.

What is a Ductless Mini-Split?

Ductless mini-split systems are a heating and cooling solution that don’t require ductwork. They can work independently in your home as a single- or multi-zone HVAC solution or be installed alongside a central HVAC system to provide supplement, controlled heating and cooling for targeted areas of your house.

Single-zone ductless mini-split systems connect one indoor unit to one outdoor unit and provide temperature control for a single room, or zone. Single-zone systems are great for isolated areas, such as a garage or home addition.

Meanwhile, a multi-zone system consists of an outdoor unit that is connected to two or more indoor units, which allows for temperature control across various zones of a house or one whole-home solution.

Because they don’t require ductwork, ductless mini-split solutions such as Rheem’s Floating Air ductless mini-splits are a more flexible HVAC solution with easy installation that does not require extensive construction or home renovation.

When to Install a Ductless Mini-Split

Because of their flexibility, ductless mini-split systems may be the right heating and cooling solution when:

1. You’re building a home addition.

If a recent home renovation includes adding a new room, extending your existing ductwork can be costly and complicated. A single-zone ductless mini-split system can provide heating and cooling to the new addition without the need for complex or invasive ductwork installation.

2. You have an older home.

Innovations in heating and cooling mean older homes may not have the infrastructure to support more modern HVAC solutions. If you live in an older home that lacks ductwork, a central HVAC system may require extensive construction to install new ducts, which can be costly and invasive.

Ductless mini-split systems can provide heating and cooling without compromising your home’s design. Depending on your home and your goals, single- or multi-zone ductless mini-split systems can be an option. Rheem also offers an indoor multi-zone ductless option that works within your home’s existing ductwork.

3. You want to support your central HVAC system.

Depending on your home’s layout and current HVAC system, a central heating and cooling system may not effectively heat or cool certain spaces or zones in your home. A ductless mini-split can target these specific spaces as a supplement to your overall HVAC system and help provide consistent comfort throughout your home.

4. You prefer individual room temperature control.

Is your family constantly fighting over the thermostat temperature? A ductless mini-split system may save the day. Ductless mini-split systems can create different temperature zones throughout your home, which can be independently controlled without impacting the entire home’s temperature.
