A single-stage unit works at only one speed and operates at either on or off, regardless of what the current heating need is.
A two-stage unit has two speeds ( 70% and 100% ) and start operation in one stage and ramp up to the second stage for greater heating needs to better match the intensity that is needed to meet the home comfort demand. A two-stage unit helps to reduce energy consumption and saves money on utility bills.
