Rheem Power Vent2 Induced Draft Gas Water Heater Delivers Higher Efficiencies, Greater Installation Flexibility

The new Rheem POWERVENT™ 2 Induced Draft Gas Water Heater combines improved installation flexibility and greater energy efficiency to meet the needs of modern single-family homes that require side-wall venting for their gas appliances. Carrying a six-year limited tank and parts warranty, the new 40-gallon and 50-gallon PowerVent 2 models are especially ideal for home owners seeking to lower energy costs by switching from an electric water heater to a natural or propane gas unit.

“Most forced-air heating and air conditioning systems now vent out a side wall, not a chimney,” explains Jim Bienias, senior residential product manager for Rheem Water Heaters. “The PowerVent 2 can be vented out that same side wall, even if it is installed away from the wall in the middle of the home’s basement.”
That distance is possible because the PowerVent 2 can be vented horizontally (or vertically) up to 75 feet, using three-inch PVC, ABS or CPVC pipe with one 90° elbow and no 45° elbows. With two-inch plastic pipe, the venting run can extend up to 32 feet.

INSTALLER-FRIENDLY DIAGNOSTICS: The new PowerVent 2 incorporates a number of components into a single, ready-to-install, residential water heater. These include electronic ignition, an exceptionally quiet blower, and an electronic control that integrates the thermostat and gas valve into a compact unit that is mounted to the front of the water heater. This self-diagnostic control uses a blinking LED light to monitor eight key operating conditions.

For example:
• Three flashes indicate the water heater’s pressure switch is closed.
• Four blinks mean the pressure switch is open.
• Six flashes cue the installer or service technician that there is an energy cutoff failure, which may mean the unit has overheated, thus triggering the cutoff.
• A constant, unblinking light alerts the technician to a problem with the control’s own circuit board and that a replacement is required.

“The net result of these electronic diagnostics is a faster, smoother installation for the original contractor,” says Bienias, “and quicker, more accurate troubleshooting for the service plumber. In either case, valuable time and costs are saved.”

HIGHEST EFFICIENCY RATINGS IN ITS CLASS: Available in 40-gallon and 50-gallon capacities with inputs of 40,000 Btu/hour, the new PowerVent 2 offers energy efficiency ratings of .64 and .65 EF, respectively, for the two models — the highest available in the residential power-vent water heater category. Both models use R-20 foam insulation (2-1/2 inches thick) to minimize heat loss in the tank and save fuel.

All PowerVent 2 models meet or exceed the energy efficiency requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90 and the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act, including the rigorous regulations that will go into effect in January 2004. In addition, the natural-gas versions of both models comply with the low-NOx, gas-appliance emission requirements of California and Texas.
